🇪🇸 UK Documents for Spain

Sworn Translation for Spain

Using UK official documents in Spain -- for residency, civil registry, employment, or other official purposes -- typically requires a sworn translation by a Traductor Jurado. This guide explains what is often required and how to prepare.

The Spain Requirement

Traductor Jurado -- What Spain Requires

Spain public bodies, civil registries and courts require translations prepared by a Traductor Jurado -- a translator formally accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A standard UK certified translation is typically not accepted in its place.

Common Uses in Spain

  • Residency registration (empadronamiento) and NIE applications
  • Civil registry (Registro Civil) submissions
  • Spanish citizenship (nacionalidad) applications
  • Property purchase through a Spanish notario
  • Driving licence exchange (canje de carnet) via the DGT
  • University qualification recognition (homologacion or convalidacion)
  • Employment in regulated sectors (education, healthcare)

Apostilles for Spain

Spanish civil registries, residency authorities and notaries typically require both an apostille on the original UK document and a sworn translation. Requirements can vary between different regions (Comunidades Autonomas) and individual offices.

Our parent service 1Apostille.org.uk can arrange apostilles alongside your translation.

How to Send Your Document

For sworn translation only, email a clear scan or good-quality photo of your document to us. You do not need to post the original. If an apostille on the original is also required, we will advise on posting the original at that stage.

Important Note

Spanish authorities often require the full (long) birth certificate showing parental details, rather than the short extract. Confirm which version is needed before ordering.

Always confirm requirements with the specific authority in Spain before ordering.

Spanish authorities generally require the full (long) birth certificate, which includes parental details. The short version (extract) may not be accepted. Check with the receiving authority, and if in doubt, order a full certificate from the General Register Office before ordering the translation.

Generally not. Spanish public bodies require a Traductor Jurado translation specifically. A general certified translation from a UK agency is typically not accepted.

No -- you can order translations directly through us. If you are working with a gestor in Spain, they may have their own preferred Traductor Jurado. Confirm with them whether they would like to arrange the translation or whether you should order directly.
