Italian citizenship can be claimed by descent from an Italian ancestor. The process requires tracing the ancestral line through birth, marriage and sometimes death certificates, proving citizenship was not renounced before the relevant ancestor emigrated.
Typically, every UK-issued birth and marriage certificate in the direct ancestral chain needs to be translated into Italian by a Traduttore Giurato. Each document is a separate translation order. Death certificates may also be required.
Most Italian comuni and consulates require an apostille on each original UK birth and marriage certificate alongside the sworn translation. Both the apostille and the translation need to be arranged for each document in the chain.
Requirements differ significantly between Italian comuni and consulates. Some have stricter requirements regarding document currency, format, and additional materials. Confirm the exact document list with the relevant comune or Italian consulate before ordering.
